Our mission is to grow and donate food to communities in need, while providing cutting-edge education in regenerative agriculture to the general public. Position Overview:
The Head Farmer Apprentice will play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the farm, overseeing production activities, managing a small team of farmhands, and learning the intricacies of running a regenerative farm. This position is an exciting opportunity for someone with a foundational background in farming or market gardening, and a commitment to learning and growing alongside a passionate team. For the first year, the successful candidate will train under the current Head of Production, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge about regenerative farming practices, production management, and farm operations.

The Head Farmer Apprentice will be responsible for managing farm operations, including planting, harvesting, and preparing produce for local distribution, ensuring the wellbeing of chicken flocks, orchard management, and general land management around the property. The ideal candidate should be open and curious about Jewish agricultural traditions, but no prior Jewish knowledge is required—an openness and willingness to learn about Jewish food wisdom is key.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Farm Management:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the farm, including crop production, harvesting, planting, and overall farm maintenance.
  • Manage planting and harvest schedules to ensure consistency and quality of produce.
  • Direct farmhands and volunteers, distributing tasks weekly and ensuring efficiency and collaboration.
  • Prepare and package produce for pickup by local partners and community organizations.
  • Maintain and operate farm tools and equipment (training will be provided as needed).
  • Collect eggs and care for farm animals, including chickens.
  • Ensure that all farm activities align with regenerative agriculture principles.
  • Monitor soil health, composting practices, and irrigation systems.
  • Training and Development:
  • Learn regenerative farming practices, Jewish agricultural wisdom, and farm operations from the current Head of Production during the first year of employment.
  • Engage with educational programming to deepen knowledge of regenerative agriculture and Jewish food traditions.
  • Participate in workshops and farm tours for the Jewish community and the general public.
  • Contribute to farm planning and educational content creation as needed.
  • Community Engagement:
  • Work closely with local community partners to facilitate food donations and farm collaborations.
  • Participate in farm-related events and outreach, fostering relationships with partners and supporters.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
  • Some experience in farming, market gardening, or similar agricultural work is preferred.
  • Familiarity with basic farm tools and equipment (training will be provided for specific tools).
  • A genuine interest in regenerative agriculture, sustainable farming practices, and community food security.
  • Experience managing or coordinating small teams is a plus.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in the sun, rain, or snow.
  • Skills:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a team.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic, hands-on environment.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage tasks, schedules, and workflows effectively.
  • Ability to perform physical labor in various weather conditions, with flexibility and a positive attitude.
